Back On

November 28, 2006

Ok, so clearly I fell off the NaBloPoMo wagon. Eight days without a post. Arrrgh.

But I’m back, and ready to post. Thanksgiving week really threw me for a loop, and although I had plenty to write about, I just could not make myself do it. But I’ll try again.

We returned from our weekend at the in-law’s last night, and I finally started decorating for Christmas. The few decorations I have up look really nice; I’ll post the pictures later today.

We’re going to wait to do the tree until my parents arrive in a couple of weeks, but that should be fun.

The only thing I don’t have any of is decent Christmas music. Any suggestions? My enitre collection consists of two grocery-store CDs from the early 90’s called Christmas with the Stars, which may have a track by Mariah Carey (the only name I recognize) and Country Christmas which is just really, really bad.

Save me people! Tell me where to find some good music to put me in the holiday spirit.

I’ve got the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack that we love, and a Handel’s Messiah that Gaby says means Christmas is coming. I hear the new Sarah Maclaughlin Christmas CD is good, but I haven’t heard it yet.

Two words: Tchaikovsky. Nutcracker. I am not normally a fan of classical music, but nothing is more pleasant on a wintry afternoon than something warm in a mug and The Nutcracker on the stereo.

As kids we used to love the Chipmunks Christmas record, and it still cracks me up. If you’re looking for something less bizarre, Bath & Body Works has a Make a Wish double CD of Christmas music for the low low price of $10. It has a mix of old favorites like Ella Fitzgerald and contemporary artists like Jason Mraz and BNL. I have one from two years ago that I really like, and I might get the new one too!

My all-time favorite Christmas CD is Ray Coniff’s “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. My mom had the album when I was a child and it reminds me of childhood Christmases.

Jaci Velasquez’s Christmas CD is really good. Barenaked Ladies have a fun Christmas CD. You can’t beat Nat King Cole’s music, either. Target has several compilations of Christmas music that look good.

Get the Nutcracker Suite, too. It’s so lovely and festive. My kids actually really like our CD.

Mannheim Steamroller has GREAT Christmas CD’s. You will love them, and they will definetely put you in the Christmas Spirit. As for the purple candles for your Advent Wreath, we have a great store in our town called Morning Star, and they have what you need. The set of candles is $3 and you can get them online at Go to Christmas – go to Advent Wreaths, scroll down to Advent Candle set at the bottom. It ships in 24 hours! Have a great Christmas!

The handbell choir I play in cut a Christmas CD a couple of years ago. Check us out under ‘Handbell Ministry’ at I’d love to let you hear the title song – ‘Christmas Reflections’ – for your listening pleasure. Look for the tab to read about the CD.
